History William Hudson & Sons (Wolverhampton) Limited, trading as "Hudsons Leathershop", was established in 1801 and originally started business as a cork cutter. Cork was big business in the 1800's and brewers, doctors and chemists all required cork for bottles and jars - there was no alternative. |
|  | Hudsons imported cork in its natural state from Portugal and treated the cork by burning it and closing the grain. After this, it was just a matter of cutting the cork to fit various receptacles. Later on, Hudsons provided cork for the motor industry in Wolverhampton - for the Sunbeam, AJS and Star.
In the late 1940's, the arrival of metal screw stoppers and new forms of metal closures made Hudsons change direction. The decision was made to concentrate on leather suitcases, purses, wallets, handbags and small leathergoods. |
